Artist-in-Residence

During our tour of the fabulous Kameda Medical Center, I couldn't keep my eyes off the art. There were these little detailed pieces of art mounted on the walls, hanging from the ceiling, and hidden in nooks and crannies:

A bookstand by the bathroom.

Teapots over telephone booths.

A hanging toy in the pediatrics clinic made from recycled kimono silk.

As it turns out, Kameda has its very own artist-in-residence, Kako Anagarasu. What an AWESOME concept! This is an idea I want to import to the US! It really wouldn't cost that much to add one more person on the UNC hospital pay-roll and honestly, I would much rather it be an artist than another medical specialist. A few more samples of her work:

City block scenes in the background made from actual wood blocks.

A fishbowl on the wall and then fish mobiles hanging from the ceiling.

A living room, of course.

After snapping photos of the walls in delight throughout our tour, can you believe that at the end, we ran into the artist, by chance, sitting in the lobby?! So of course, I got my picture with her and her assistant:

  1. How about medical student artists donating their work to brighten AHEC housing?
